EndNote helps you manage your bibliography and citations, and is installed onto the computer of your choice. You store your citations offline on your computer, and use a Microsoft Word or Mac Pages plugin to automatically create bibliographies. EndNote is licensed for use by current NU faculty, staff, and students.

Troubleshooting: EndNote asking for license number?

If you have already installed EndNote without following the "extract all" step, then EndNote will ask you for a license number. You should uninstall EndNote, and re-install using the "extract all" step.  Right-click to unzip the download package; otherwise the full license will not install.

During installation, when you right-click on the EndNote zip file, you should see this option:

If you do not see this option, you should instead double-click on the EndNote .zip file and you will then see the "extract all" tool.  Single-click on the ENXInst.msi file and run the "extract all" tool. NOTE: the number "5" or "6" or "7" in the file name will depend on which version of EndNote you choose to download. These directions are the same, regardless of which version you have chosen.

Once you have extracted all files, you should see the EndNoteXInst.msi file in the same folder as the License.dat folder. You can then double-click on the .msi file to run the installation.

EndNote Online

A web-based version of EndNote is also available, called EndNote Online (formerly called EndNote Web.) With this version, you set up a personal account on the EndNote online site and store your citations on the web (cloud-based) instead of on your own computer.  You can create an account in multiple ways:

  • If you are on-campus, sign up for an account via the EndNote Online website.
  • If you are off-campus and already own EndNote for your desktop or laptop, use the Register Online button in the EndNote preferences to create your EndNote Online library.
  • If you are already registered in Web of Knowledge, use that logon to access your EndNote Online library.
  • If you create a free ResearcherID account, login to EndNote Online using the same user name and password.

For more information on registration and getting started, see this page from the company that makes EndNote.

Connection Files

Add-ons called "connection files" allow you to search online databases directly through EndNote. We generally recommend that you search within the database's native browser and export references from within the database to EndNote. However, if you also want to use the EndNote interface to search databases, there are thousands of connection files available from the Endnote web site.

Download the Scholar OneSearch connection file to search Northeastern's library catalog and import references from within EndNote.

If you need other connection files, contact us for more information.
