How long can I keep an item?

Snell Stacks

90 days, 3 renewal periods

Media Items (DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes)

1 week, no renewals

Boston Library Consortium Items (WorldCat)

56 days, no renewals


3 hours - 7 days, no renewals

The Hub

14 days, 3 renewal periods

Items that have been requested by another library user may not be checked out again or renewed. If items are needed for more than 3 renewal periods, you may bring them to the Help and Information Desk to check them out again.

What if an item is returned late?

There is a 3-day grace period before fines are charged on all Snell Library items except reserves.

Snell Stacks, Media, BLC, and Hub Items $.25 per day ($10 maximum)
Reserves $1.00 per hour ($25 maximum)

If items are overdue for more than 40 days, you may incur additional lost item charges. The library reserves the right to block your account for excessive fines or failure to return items needed by other borrowers.

How do I pay fines and fees on my library account?

NU students are billed for fines and fees through the Billing and Payments office of Student Financial Services. The balance on student library accounts transfers to Billing and Payments weekly, so check your student account for the most recent bills for library items.
